Breed’s Temperament

Breed’s character

Development in Maine coon is slow and they mature at the age of 3-5 years. They are big, gentle and good-natured goofs. Voice of these cats is different from other cats. Also they meow rarely, and even they do, their soft, tiny voice doesn’t fit with their size.

Breed’s standard

The most important features of Maine Coon are their head and body shape.

  • Head: Slightly longer than it is wide. A gently concave profile with high cheekbones
  • Ears: Large ears, wide at the base
  • Eyes: Large, expressive, and round eyes set somewhat at oblique angle
  • Hair: long hair

Breed’s grooming

Maine Coon cats have heavy and shaggy coat i.e. silky to touch. Matting is very rare and weekly combing is necessary to remove the dead hair that might otherwise be ingested by your cat when he bathes himself. Also trim the cat’s nails for every 10-14 days. Usually cats are prone to periodontal diseases, so regular brushing is essential using the vet-approved toothpaste.

Breed’s health

The ideal Maine coon is strong and healthy cat. They have some hereditary health issues, so you should be cautious about whom you buy from. These conditions include: hip dysplasia, spinal muscular atrophy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
